Kos is the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. The Tree under which he used to teach still stands in the centre of the town, being the oldest tree in Europe and one of the oldest worldwide.

The Asklepieion is undoubtedly the most important monument on Kos, the oldest and most famous centre of healing in the ancient world. It is until today that the Hippocratic Oath is heard every summer at the temple of Asklepieion, spoken in Ancient Greek.Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Italians have passed through the island and formed the mosaic of modern Kos.
